The Song and the Memory
That na the rough song Godwin dey sing oh, him dey reason him girl Caro, and all the intimate things them done do. Him lay on his bed holding Caro picture, him come smile as him remember wetin them both do last night. "If to say her papa no go vex like mosquito wey never suck blood eh, I for no let Caro go," him come grin. Caro na real something oh.
Na so knock come him door come interrupt him thinking.
"Na who be that na!" him exclaim. "Abeg oh, make una leave me oh."
"Open the door jor, we dey share money," na so the voice from the other side talk.
*Money!* Godwin smile. "Na only money go fit make me stand oh."
Him stand up from him bed, put the picture of Caro in him pocket, and na so him open the door — and na so him come face to face with one gun wey dey point at him head.

Officer Shaky Nerves
Godwin froze. Him come add blinking too, as him look from the man wey dey point ham gun. Him know say him done enter kasala.
"You dey under arrest," the man talk. "I be Officer Shaky Nerves."
Godwin come see as the officer hand dey shake, and the gun still dey point for him head. Him come swallow hard to make sure say the spittle pass well. "Officer, abeg no vex oh, but commot that thing for my head before you blow ham oh."
"Shut up! You dey mad? You dey talk back to me eh?"
"Abeg no vex na," Godwin plead. "Na the way your hand dey shake na make me dey worry oh. True true, that gun fit blow my head oh."
"You no hear say you dey under arrest?" the officer asked him.
"Na wetin I do na?"
"That one na for station you go know. Come out now before I press trigger."
"Abeg oh, e never reach like that na, officer."
"Oya, come out sharp sharp, motor dey wait for you."
"Officer, no be say I no want to come oh, but I no do anything."
In that moment another officer come appear at Godwin door. When him see how Officer Shaky Nerves dey point gun for Godwin head — and with the way him hand dey shake — him slow down. "Eh, Shaky Nerves easy oh, you fit blow him head oh."
"Wetin you dey find here, Half Pass Four?" Shaky Nerves asked the officer.
"We done wait tire, you never show oh. Fuel done finish for the motor."
Godwin start to laugh. When him look at the face of the officers and see their eyes flashing like lightning and their faces turning red, him close him mouth sharp.
"You dey laugh us eh?" Officer Half Pass Four asked him with a hot slap.
"Owh!" Godwin exclaimed as the slap made contact. "Officer sorry na."
"Since na this guy cause ham, him go refuel am oh," Officer Shaky Nerves say, glaring at Godwin.
"Me I dey broke oh, abeg una oh," Godwin say.

Caro's Papa
Na so them dey bicker, and no one want to tell Godwin why them want to arrest ham. Him just stand for him door looking at the two officers who dey look ham back with murder in their eyes.
"Abeg make una no look me like that oh. No be my fault una come my house."
"No be you go date big man pikin?" Shaky Nerves asked ham.
"Abeg oh, na Caro I dey date oh," Godwin told them.
"Na that girl papa order your arrest oh. Say you dey spoil him daughter," Officer Half Pass Four say.
The sun suddenly went down and the weather start to get darker. The wind come dey cold and Godwin come dey feel ham — him hand dey stiff. As him look him see Officer Shaky Nerves teeth dey chatter. "Why e come cold na? Sun na been dey shine oh," Shaky Nerves say.
And na so rain start to fall. When Godwin enter house the two officers come follow him enter.
"Officer, I no invite una inside my house oh," him protest.
"Shut up, you want us to wet eh?" Shaky Nerves asked ham.
"No be my fault na. Na duty you dey oh."
Officer Half Pass Four no dey even reason them. Him eye dey for one small loaf of bread him see on top Godwin fridge. Godwin come use eye follow look where the officer eye dey, him come hold him breath. When Officer Half Pass Four stand up, Godwin no fit hold himself again — na so him blurt out, "Abeg oh, no near that bread."
Officer Half Pass Four froze, with a guilty look at Godwin.
"So you even get bread?" Shaky Nerves asked him.
"Na stone I for get eh?" him shot back.
"No be you say you no get money?" the officer asked him.
"So I no go chop again eh?" him answer back.
"When we reach station, e go back for you oh," Half Pass Four said.

The Smoke from Nowhere
In that moment, smoke start to rise from the center of Godwin house — just like that, with no warning oh. E first come out as red color, then e come change to blue, and finally white. The three men froze. They look at each other and each of them dey see the fear wey dey in everyone eye.
"Wetin be the meaning of this na?" Half Pass Four asked, shifting backward away from the smoke.
"This na big problem oh. I no do anything oh," Godwin say, shifting back too.
The smoke come finish coming out. When they look where e come from, them see a big hole, and inside the hole — a bag, with one note on top. The three of them step back and Officer Shaky Nerves nudge Godwin with him gun. "Go open the bag."
"Why na me?" Godwin asked him, shifting so him no go dey in front of the gun.
"Because na your house na," Officer Half Pass Four tell ham.
"No be police supposed to investigate eh?" Godwin shot back.
"We done investigate finish. Now go bring the evidence," Shaky Nerves tell ham, shifting the gun to point at him, him hand becoming more shaky by the second.
"Abeg oh, calm down — see your hand fit pull the trigger on its own," Godwin say.
"Oya, go check the bag now."
Godwin no get choice. So him go the hole and bend down. Him first collect the note wey dey on top the bag and come open ham.
"Wetin the note talk?" Officer Shaky Nerves asked him.
"I no fit read. Here, take ham," Godwin answer, giving the note to Shaky Nerves.
The two officers come look at themselves. Shaky Nerves come vex, point at Half Pass Four. "Collect the note and tell me wetin e talk."
"But… you know say me sef no sabi read."
The three of them sat down and come dey look each other.
"So una no sabi read eh?" Godwin asked them.
"Shut up!" both of them shout ham down.
"How una take get work for police sef?" him asked them, no caring about their angry faces.
"I say shut up!"
"Make I call my neighbor make him read ham?" him asked them.
They both look at each other and, reluctantly, they nod.

The Note from Hell
Godwin come go call him neighbor Innocent to come read the letter. As them dey inside, them dey hear how the rain dey fall hard, the cold biting even more. The two officers wait for Godwin and when him come with him neighbor, them no waste time — them thrust the letter give ham. Officer Shaky Nerves point him gun for him head. "Read wetin dey this note. If you like, I go blow your head."
"Abeg oh, I no sabi lie oh. My name na Innocent."
"Read the thing fast. I no want to hear."
Innocent glance at the note and him eye bulge. The other three notice.
"Wetin happen?" Godwin asked him.
"The note say make una read ham before the rain stop, or the person go run mad," Innocent reply.
"Read it now!" Half Pass Four exclaimed.
"I no fit when that gun dey my head and him hand dey shake like that."
Officer Shaky Nerves was talked down to holster him gun for a few minutes before him come agree.
Innocent cleared him throat and come read:

The Bags That Burn
When them look at the hole again, them see four bags. With plenty fear, them open the bags, and inside them see money — plenty money, so much for each person that they come know it no go be easy to spend it all before the rain stop. Na so each of them start to cry, knowing say them done already lost them soul.
But then Godwin come stand up. Collecting him bundle of money, him come dey go door to door to make sure say everyone collect their share — but it no work. As them touch the money, e burn their hand.
Him return to him room and sat down with the others, waiting for the one who will come for their souls.
Chief Okoro's Satisfaction
Caro's papa sit for him house dey laugh when the Hell Administrator send ham message say him done arrange the pitfall for the boy wey dey disturb him Caro. Him done tire to see Caro sneak out every night to go see boy wey no get sense. That boy them call Godwin na big problem — e better say him sell him soul to the devil, after all him put something for Caro body wey make it easy for ham to collect any boy soul wey done touch her. Him be Chief Okoro, the big baba for the shrine. Nobody go spoil where him money dey come from. Him beat him chest and him come grin. That small boy go pay, eh.

Chief Okoro na bad man. Him sell all him pikin soul to the devil so him go rich. Him done over-kill people so tay him dey see dead bodies for road wey dey point ham out, and him go point them back come say, "Move on abeg, you done die."

The Crying Room
Godwin come dey cry as him sit down with the officers and Innocent.
"I no ready to die oh," Innocent wail. Him face come get angry and him come point finger for Godwin. "Na you put me for this wahala oh, you go pay."
Godwin still dey cry, come look ham with angry eye. "How I go pay when me sef dey same wahala?"
Officer Shaky Nerves come cough. "What if I come blow una head before the rain stop?"
"I no follow, abeg no try that one oh," Officer Half Past Four say as him shift commot from near Officer Shaky Nerves.
"Why him hand dey shake as him hold gun?" Innocent asked.
"You dey talk about me, eh?" Officer Shaky Nerves asked ham.
"No oh, na question I asked oh."
"How we go commot for this jam na?" Godwin asked them.
"No be you cause ham?" Half Past Four say, slapping him. "You go run big man pikin street, now I done enter kasala because of you."

The Second Smoke
Another smoke start to drift out again and na so them close mouth, dey watch. Them done even forget how to breathe. When the smoke stop, a note come out. Na so them look Innocent with dark eye as him hurry to collect it. As him read the note, him come fall for ground dey cry more. Them hurry ask ham wetin dey inside. Him look them come say, "Make I read ham again abeg."
"Then why you come fall?" Shaky Nerves asked angrily, come point him gun for Innocent head.
Innocent come say, "Your hand dey shake more oh, abeg."
"Read the thing," Half Past Four growl.
Innocent turn the paper come read:
