The Song and the Memory
That was the rough song Godwin was singing [that na the rough song Godwin dey sing oh], thinking about his girl Caro and all the intimate things they had done together. He lay on his bed holding Caro's picture, smiling as he remembered what they both did last night. "If her father wouldn't get angry like a mosquito that has never sucked blood [if to say her papa no go vex like mosquito wey never suck blood], I would never let Caro go," he grinned. Caro was really something else [Caro na real something oh].
That was when a knock at his door interrupted his thoughts [na so knock come him door come interrupt him thinking].
"Who is that!" he exclaimed. "Please, just leave me alone [abeg oh, make una leave me oh]."
"Open the door, we are sharing money [open the door jor, we dey share money]," the voice from the other side said.
*Money!* Godwin smiled. "Only money could make me get up [na only money go fit make me stand oh]."
He stood up from his bed, put Caro's picture in his pocket, and opened the door — and came face to face with a gun pointed at his head.
---
Officer Shaky Nerves
Godwin froze. He started blinking too, as he looked at the man pointing the gun at him [as him look from the man wey dey point ham gun]. He knew he was in serious trouble [him know say him done enter kasala].
"You are under arrest," the man said. "I am Officer Shaky Nerves."
Godwin noticed the officer's hand was shaking, yet the gun was still pointed at his head. He swallowed hard to make sure the saliva went down properly [him come swallow hard to make sure say the spittle pass well]. "Officer, please don't be offended, but remove that thing from my head before you accidentally fire it [abeg no vex oh, but commot that thing for my head before you blow ham oh]."
"Shut up! Are you mad? You are talking back to me?"
"Please don't be angry [abeg no vex na]," Godwin pleaded. "It's the way your hand is shaking that is worrying me [na the way your hand dey shake na make me dey worry oh]. Honestly, that gun could go off and blow my head [true true, that gun fit blow my head oh]."
"Did you not hear that you are under arrest?" the officer asked him.
"What did I do [na wetin I do na]?"
"You will find that out at the station. Come out now before I pull the trigger."
"Please, it hasn't come to that [abeg oh, e never reach like that na], officer."
"Let's go, quickly, a car is waiting for you [oya, come out sharp sharp, motor dey wait for you]."
"Officer, it's not that I don't want to come, but I haven't done anything."
At that moment another officer appeared at Godwin's door. When he saw how Officer Shaky Nerves was pointing the gun at Godwin's head — and the way his hand was shaking — he slowed down. "Hey, Shaky Nerves, take it easy, you could blow his head off [you fit blow him head oh]."
"What are you doing here, Half Past Four [wetin you dey find here, Half Pass Four]?" Shaky Nerves asked the officer.
"We have been waiting forever, you hadn't shown up, and the fuel in the car has finished [we done wait tire, you never show oh, fuel done finish for the motor]."
Godwin started to laugh. When he looked at the faces of the officers and saw their eyes flashing like lightning and their faces turning red, he quickly shut his mouth.
"You are laughing at us [you dey laugh us eh]?" Officer Half Past Four asked him with a hot slap.
"Ow!" Godwin exclaimed as the slap made contact. "Officer, I'm sorry [officer sorry na]."
"Since this guy caused all this, he will refuel the car [since na this guy cause ham, him go refuel am oh]," Officer Shaky Nerves said, glaring at Godwin.
"I am broke, please [me I dey broke oh, abeg una oh]," Godwin said.

Caro's Papa
So they kept bickering [na so them dey bicker], and no one wanted to tell Godwin why they wanted to arrest him. He just stood at his door looking at the two officers who stared back at him with murder in their eyes.
"Please don't look at me like that [abeg make una no look me like that oh]. It is not my fault you came to my house."
"Were you not dating a big man's daughter [no be you go date big man pikin]?" Shaky Nerves asked him.
"Please, I am only dating Caro [abeg oh, na Caro I dey date oh]," Godwin told them.
"That girl's father ordered your arrest, saying you are corrupting his daughter [say you dey spoil him daughter]," Officer Half Past Four said.
The sun suddenly went down and the weather started to get darker. The wind turned cold and Godwin felt it — his hands went stiff. As he looked over he saw Officer Shaky Nerves' teeth chattering. "Why has it suddenly turned cold [why e come cold na]? The sun was shining just now [sun na been dey shine oh]," Shaky Nerves said.
And just like that, rain started to fall [na so rain start to fall]. When Godwin stepped inside his house, the two officers followed him in.
"Officer, I did not invite you into my house [I no invite una inside my house oh]," he protested.
"Shut up, do you want us to get wet [you want us to wet eh]?" Shaky Nerves asked him.
"It is not my fault. You are the ones on duty [na duty you dey oh]."
Officer Half Past Four was not even paying attention to them. His eyes were fixed on a small loaf of bread sitting on top of Godwin's fridge. Godwin followed the officer's gaze, held his breath, and when Officer Half Past Four stood up, Godwin could not contain himself — he blurted out, "Please, don't go near that bread [abeg oh, no near that bread]."
Officer Half Past Four froze, with a guilty look at Godwin.
"So you even have bread [so you even get bread]?" Shaky Nerves asked him.
"What was I supposed to have, stones [na stone I for get eh]?" he shot back.
"Were you not the one who said you had no money?" the officer asked him.
"So I am not allowed to eat [so I no go chop again eh]?" he answered back.
"When we get to the station, you will answer for this [e go back for you oh]," Half Past Four said.

The Smoke from Nowhere
At that moment, smoke started to rise from the center of Godwin's house — just like that, with no warning. It first came out red, then changed to blue, and finally white. The three men froze. They looked at each other and in every eye was the same undeniable fear.
"What does this mean [wetin be the meaning of this na]?" Half Past Four asked, shifting backward away from the smoke.
"This is a serious problem. I did not do anything [this na big problem oh, I no do anything oh]," Godwin said, also shifting back.
When the smoke finally cleared, they looked at where it had come from and saw a big hole — and inside the hole, a bag with a note on top. The three of them stepped back and Officer Shaky Nerves nudged Godwin with his gun. "Go and open the bag."
"Why me [why na me]?" Godwin asked him, shifting so he wouldn't be in front of the gun.
"Because it is your house [because na your house na]," Officer Half Past Four told him.
"Are the police not supposed to investigate [no be police supposed to investigate eh]?" Godwin shot back.
"We have finished investigating. Now go and bring the evidence," Shaky Nerves told him, shifting the gun to point at him, his hand becoming more shaky by the second.
"Please, calm down — your hand could pull the trigger on its own [abeg oh, calm down, see your hand fit pull the trigger on its own]," Godwin said.
"Go and check the bag now."
Godwin had no choice. He walked to the hole and bent down. He first picked up the note on top of the bag and opened it.
"What does the note say [wetin the note talk]?" Officer Shaky Nerves asked him.
"I cannot read. Here, take it [I no sabi read, here take ham]," Godwin answered, handing the note to Shaky Nerves.
The two officers looked at each other. Shaky Nerves got angry and pointed at Half Past Four. "Collect the note and tell me what it says."
"But… you know I also cannot read [you know say me sef no sabi read]."
The three of them sat down and stared at each other.
"So none of you can read [so una no sabi read eh]?" Godwin asked them.
"Shut up!" both of them shouted him down.
"How did you people even get jobs in the police force [how una take get work for police sef]?" he asked them, not caring about their angry faces.
"I said shut up!"
"Should I call my neighbor to come and read it [make I call my neighbor make him read ham]?" he asked them.
They both looked at each other and, reluctantly, nodded.

The Note from Hell
Godwin went to call his neighbor Innocent to come and read the letter. As they sat inside, they could hear the rain falling hard, the cold biting even deeper. The two officers waited for Godwin and when he returned with his neighbor, they wasted no time — they thrust the letter at him. Officer Shaky Nerves pointed his gun at his head. "Read what is in this note. I will blow your head off if you try anything [if you like, I go blow your head]."
"Please, I do not know how to lie [abeg oh, I no sabi lie oh]. My name is Innocent."
"Read it quickly. I don't want to hear anything else."
Innocent glanced at the note and his eyes bulged. The other three noticed.
"What happened [wetin happen]?" Godwin asked him.
"The note says we must read it before the rain stops, or the person will go mad [the person go run mad]," Innocent replied.
"Read it now!" Half Past Four exclaimed.
"I cannot with that gun at my head and his hand shaking like that."
Officer Shaky Nerves was talked down into holstering his gun for a few minutes before he finally agreed.
Innocent cleared his throat and read:

Dear Lucky Winner,
*You have been lucky to be part of the draw made in Hell. When the smoke pops up, two things will be seen — a bag and a note. We in Hell test the greedy ones and the ones with a level head. If you go for the note first, then congratulations — you have won. Hopefully you can spend everything in the bag before the rain stops, or your soul will be taken. If you are not alone, other bags will appear according to your numbers. Good luck. And if not — Hell awaits your souls.
Sincerely,
Hell Administrator, for the Devil.

The Bags That Burn
When they looked at the hole again, they saw four bags. With great fear, they opened the bags, and inside found money — a great deal of money, so much for each person that they knew it would not be easy to spend it all before the rain stopped. And so each of them started to cry, knowing they had already lost their souls.
But then Godwin stood up. Taking his bundle of money, he went door to door trying to ensure everyone received their share — but it did not work. As they touched the money, it burned their hands.
He returned to his room and sat down with the others, waiting for the one who would come to collect their souls.
