INTRODUCTION
"The Tide Knows My Name" is a haunting tale of isolation, sacrifice, and the unbreakable bonds of family — even across the boundaries of life and death. When Ryan defies his father's desperate warning and ventures into the cursed Sea of Sacrifice, he finds himself marooned on a mysterious island where the past refuses to stay buried. Armed with nothing but a song he wrote to stave off madness, Ryan soon discovers that the sea has a memory — and it knows exactly who he is.
This story explores themes of grief, regret, and the weight of choices passed down through generations. It is a meditation on loneliness, the ghosts we carry, and the sacrifices that echo long after we've made them.
SONG LYRICS
(Verse 1)
The sun is a liar, it burns like hell,
The moon is a mirror that shows me my grief.
The waves keep on erasing my SOS —
The only words left are the ones I can't say.
(Chorus)
I'm as lonely as a cloud with no rain to fall,
As lonely as a grave with no name at all.
Just me and the heat and the endless blue,
Singing this song that nobody knew.
Oh, island, you're my keeper, but you'll never be my home —
I'm as lonely as a man who talks to stone.
(Verse 2)
I built me a shelter with the skin of the dead,
But hunger is nothing compared to desire —
For a voice, for a touch, for a face I once knew,
For a ship on the horizon that never comes through.
(Chorus)
I'm as lonely as a cloud with no rain to fall,
As lonely as a sea grave with no name at all.
Just me and the heat and the endless blue,
Singing this song that nobody knew.
Oh, island, you're my keeper, but you'll never be my home —
I'm as lonely as a man who talks to stone.
(Outro — spoken/sung softly)
And the tide knows my name...
But it never calls.
OPENING NARRATIVE
This is the song Ryan keeps singing day after day for a year now. It has been his companion, for he was alone on an island that he had been warned by his father never to trespass on.
THE ARGUMENT
He remembers that fateful morning when he told his dad he would be taking an adventure with his friends on the Sea of Sacrifice.
"Absolutely not," his father, Mr. Patrick, had said in a fierce voice that reverberated off the walls of their home. Ryan had seen how the mirror on the wall had cracked from the vehemence of his father's voice.
"But why?" he had asked, taking a step back.
Mr. Patrick closed his eyes and tried to calm his nerves. He knew his outburst had frightened his son, and he didn't want his son to see him like a lunatic or someone who was trying to stop him from having fun. He squeezed his fist tightly until the knuckles showed white. His breathing threatened to burst his lungs, but he clamped it down with a strong will.
"Son, the Sea of Sacrifice takes more than you bargain for," he said, shaking his head and sitting down at his desk.
"Dad, that's just bullshit. You're too superstitious. Besides, that's the sea where you met Mom."
Mr. Patrick laughed a hollow laugh, which even frightened Ryan more. He had never seen his father laugh like that; it sounded like thunder rumbling.
"Yes, that is where I met your mother, but you never heard the full story."
"Then tell me," he had asked his father.
"I can't, son. If I say a word about it, I will die — that is the price, and that's why it's called the Sea of Sacrifice."
THE WARNING
Ryan scoffed. "Father, look around you — we're in the 21st century, and we have technology. Forget about those hearsays."
"You're my only son. I don't want to lose you. Please don't go to the Sea of Sacrifice. I went, and I regret it to this day. My father went, and he advised me, just like I'm telling you now, but I never listened, and I have been haunted by his ghost to this day."
"Dad, I'm not alone — I'm with friends, and we will be cruising on a yacht with the latest technology. What could go wrong?"
"Nature," his father simply said.
"I'm sorry, Father, but that's just talk."
"Remember the Titanic," his father said.
"There was no modern technology at that time. I'm going, whether you like it or not."
Mr. Patrick's chin fell. He closed his eyes and muttered words no one would be able to hear. He cursed silently, knowing he could never stop his son. All those were the sacrifices the sea asked of him.

THE JOURNEY
Ryan never knew when the tears had fallen. He had been thinking about his chat with his father before he departed with his friends; now he knew his father had been right. He remembered how it started: they had all been having fun, enjoying the ride of a lifetime. Some were drinking; others were indoors having fun with the ladies who had joined them. He sat on the deck of the yacht, gazing at the rising sun on the horizon. He marveled at the beauty — and how, in every direction he looked, there was water. He wondered what the yacht would look like now if someone viewed it from a satellite in space — a tiny dot in the middle of a vast body of water.
THE VEIL
Suddenly, he felt the weather grow colder, and then he saw it: a transparent veil in the middle of the sea, and they were going through it. He held his breath, knowing it was too late for him to shout. They passed th
rough, and when he looked back, they were no longer in the world he had known — they were on this damn island.
THE DESCENT INTO MADNESS
Ryan's brain couldn't take it all. It seemed like a blur in fast motion — from an adventure full of fun to a horror that he couldn't believe he was part of.
First, it was Sandra, the beautiful brunette with those inviting blue eyes. She had woken up the morning after they got to the island, and she had complained of seeing her own shadow mock her. She had shown them a deep scar on her left arm where her own shadow had cut her with a rusted knife. They had all thought she was making things up. He remembers James telling her she may have fallen during the wild party, and they had all laughed, thinking she was higher than a kite. The wound had gotten infected, and she had been claiming they would all die and only one person would remain on the island — and he would sell more than his or her soul to the island. They had just all said, "Yeah, we've heard you."
SANDRA'S DISAPPEARANCE
During the night, it had gotten so heated that James had said nasty things to Sandra, and she had bitten him, taking a chunk of his flesh with her teeth. They had locked her in a room, and in the morning, she was just gone — while the door was still locked. No evidence of forced entry. She just vanished, leaving her skin behind, just like a snake sheds its skin.
JAMES'S FALL
Then James had fallen ill from the bite Sandra had given him. He started acting in a manner that they believed was similar to Sandra. He had complained that anytime he looked into the sea, he lost part of his body. He told them he couldn't feel his hands and his legs. They thought he had lost his mind, and he had vanished too — leaving his skin, similar to what had happened to Sandra.

THE WALK
Ryan thought about all this as he got up from where he was sitting and started walking.
THE ISLAND
The island is barren. Nothing — just a few grains of sand and a single tree with no leaves growing on it. It is a large island, a few parts rocky and just a handful of sand here and there. He couldn't remember how the yacht was lost, but he woke up one day on the island with the skins of his companions all about him. He had used them to create shelter. He had scavenged the land, but he couldn't find anything worthy of use.
---
THE TRAIL
He kept walking, this time to a part of the land he had never trespassed before. He saw the moist floor which led to the surface of the sea, and then he saw the footprints of small animals that looked like large rats. He wet his lips, knowing he could eat it if he could catch any. Meat had been scarce, and he had no way of getting any. He followed the trail for a long time, and then he saw the mouth of a cave. At first, he thought he was looking at a dark hole in the earth, but as he came closer, he saw the cave, and he hurried inside.
THE CAVE
He was surprised to find that he could see the inside properly. It was illuminated by a golden light right at the center of the cave, with a single bottle standing below the light. He peered into the bottle, squinting his eyes from the glare of the light. He stretched his hands to touch the bottle but held it back.
"What if it's a jinx?" he questioned, not wanting to die or to turn into anything. But at the same time, he was curious to know what it was and if it might get him off the island.
